In Kindergarten and First Grade Music, we have been exploring opposites we find in music! Students can show they know high and low sounds by pretending to be an animal in the sky when they hear a high sound, and pretending to be an animal on the ground when they hear a low sound. We have also discussed how music can be fast like a cheetah, or slow like a turtle. We use 'forte arms' and 'piano hands' to show that we know our music words for 'loud' and 'soft'.
Some of our favorite animal songs are:
"The Old Gray Cat is Sleeping" (which uses fast/slow and forte/piano sounds)
"All Around the Kitchen" (which tells a story about Farmer Garner and her pesky chickens!)
"The Kangaroo" (a song which First Grade used to play a game and play the xylophones)
"Hear the Lovely Sound" (which uses the rhythm "ta" "ta" "ti-ti" "ta")
We have also been using "ta", "ti-ti" and "sh" to make music sentences. Ask a Kindergartener or First Grader to draw "ta", "ti-ti" or "sh" and they will show you what they know! :)
