New Instruments!!! and February Composer of the Month

I am so excited to show you these new additions to our music room!

Do you see those beauties up on top of the cabinets? Those are 7 new mid-sized cajons and two mini-cajons! "What is a cajon?", you may ask.

Check out this great description from musiciansfriend.com...

"Over the centuries, many percussion instruments have spawned from the result of people getting creative with extremely limited resources. Among these simple yet versatile instruments is the cajon drum. With origins dating back to the 18th century, the cajon drum is a six sided instrument that can be played with both your hands and feet at the same time. Capable of producing a diverse range of rhythms and tones, it's generally considered to be the most widely used Afro-Peruvian percussion instrument. Today, the cajon drum can be heard everywhere from Irish folk festivals to popular musical genres like fusion, jazz, funk and even rock. "

A small percussion ensemble will play these as part of our musical revue in May! Students, if you are interested in this ensemble, be on the lookout for a sign-up sheet and after school rehearsal schedule for the ensemble. Those will be posted outside the music room the second week of March.

And let's not forget, our composer of the month: Brahms!

Here's a link to "The Best of Brahms". As you can see, he wrote a ton of music and so much of it is the BEST. (I mean, "The Best of Brahms" album is over 2 hours long!).

If you're looking for just one popular Brahms piece, most people have heard Brahms' Lullaby.

Last, but not least, let's not forget when Brahms had his own cereal. (Ha ha!)
