It is officially Spring Break! March has been a great month for Park Shark Music! Kindergarten and first grade students explored African drums and rhythm (see above photo). Ask a kindergarten or first grade student to name each of the drums in the photo. They can even tell you how the drum in the middle got it's name!
Second graders learned weather songs and practiced their Curwen hand signs. They are quite good at showing the hand signs for So, Mi, Do and La!

Third graders also worked on their hand signs and we have started talking about opera. We listened to a song from The Magic Flute last week in which two birds sang a duet about their future family. We also finished our musical reading of The Sign of the Seahorse by Graeme Base. Each student was assigned to a character in the book and they played the instrument for that character each time he or she appeared in the story.

Fourth graders wrapped up their group compositions and made posters showing what they learned about early American folk music. (Photos of those posters to be posted soon!)

Fifth and sixth grades started the music for our musical. We certainly have some enthusiastic singers!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun spring break! :)
